Mable Zine – A Tribute to Sweet Potato Pie

Rooted in memory, love, and tradition, Mable pays tribute to my Grandma Mable and her legendary sweet potato pie. Using miniatures and fashion dolls, this photo series recreates the warmth of family gatherings and the sacred joy found in the kitchen.

  • Some of my most cherished memories live in the sound of pots clanking, the scent of spices in the air, and the buzz of my aunties and cousins preparing a meal under Grandma’s watchful eye. Sweet potato pie wasn’t just dessert, it was a rite of passage, a symbol of trust, and a deeply honored tradition. This series explores the cultural weight of that legacy through carefully crafted scenes that embody the spirit of Thanksgiving, the love of matriarchs, and the powerful role of food in Black family life.

  • Inspired by my own family’s kitchen in Oklahoma, I began by reflecting on specific sensory memories, scents, sounds, colors, and textures. I researched vintage cookware, pie-making rituals, and the visual language of Southern kitchens. Each miniature scene was built with intention, from the placement of rolling pins to the fabric of aprons, echoing the familial rhythm of preparing Grandma Mable’s pie. I also used dolls that represented generations of women passing down knowledge, reflecting the matrilineal heart of the story.

  • In post, I focused on creating warmth and texture, evoking the golden glow of an oven light and the cozy intimacy of a crowded kitchen. Color grading wood tones, warm reds, and soft blues to visually reference Grandma Mable’s kitchen itself and the seasonal tones of autumn. Sequencing was guided by feeling: from anticipation and preparation to reflection and legacy. The finished zine offers not only a visual homage to Grandma Mable but a sensory portal to home, tradition, and belonging.

The power of warm hues

As the sun painted the room with warm hues, I realized that it’s glow held a unique power in this project.
